Connect Taption to Codex

Taption transcribes audio and video, with transcript text and SRT/VTT captions and subtitles available through MCP. This guide connects Taption to the Codex CLI through MCP, using terminal commands to add the server, sign in, and check the available tools. Retrieve a completed transcript, then ask Codex to turn the discussion into development tasks and identify decisions that still need clarification.

Start with the Codex CLI installed and signed in. Have your Taption sign-in details ready, then follow these steps in order.

Install Codex CLI(opens in a new tab)
  1. Add Taption

Open a terminal in your project folder and run this command once. It adds Taption to your Codex settings. If you already added Taption, continue to sign-in.

    In your terminal
codex mcp add taption --url https://api.taption.com/mcp-custom
    Use config.toml instead

Instead of the add command, add this section to ~/.codex/config.toml. Keep your other settings. If [mcp_servers.taption] already exists, update its URL rather than adding a duplicate. Then continue to Sign in to Taption.

    ~/.codex/config.toml
    [mcp_servers.taption]
    url = "https://api.taption.com/mcp-custom"
  2. Sign in to Taption

Run this command to open Taption in your browser. If the add command already opened the sign-in page, continue to Allow access. If you are already connected, skip to Open Codex.

    In your terminal
    codex mcp login taption
  3. Open Codex

Back in your terminal, run this command from your project folder. If Codex is already running, exit and reopen it to load the connection.

    In your terminal
    codex
  4. Check the tools

Type /mcp inside Codex, not in your terminal. Look for taption and its tools: list_transcripts, get_transcript, transcribe, and translate_transcript. If they are missing, finish sign-in and restart Codex.

    Inside Codex
    /mcp
  5. Try a message

Close the MCP view and send the message below in Codex. Approve list_transcripts if asked. Reading your library does not use transcription minutes.

    Codex
    1. @Taption Transcribe the attached video. It is in English; give me the output in subtitle/caption format.
    2. @Taption Show my recent Taption transcripts.
    3. @Taption Give me the three key tips in the video “How to bake a cake”.

Command not found? Install the Codex CLI and open a new terminal. If the browser does not open, use the login link printed in your terminal. For an authentication error, run codex mcp login taption again, then restart Codex.

No transcripts? Confirm you signed in to the right Taption account. An empty library is a valid response.

Using Codex in your editor?

In the Codex extension, open the gear menu → MCP servers → Add server. Enter taption as the name, choose Streamable HTTP, and use the URL below. Save, select Restart extension, then Authenticate if requested. The extension and CLI share settings on the same Codex host.
